The Flaneur
The Flaneur
Literally meaning 'stroller', 'lounger', 'saunterer', or 'loafer', but with some nuanced additional meanings. Baudelaire characterised the flâneur as a "gentleman stroller of city streets", he saw the flâneur as having a key role in understanding, participating in, and portraying the city. The wander detached from society with no other purpose than to be an acute observer of urban contemporary life.
